december-header_02Every year my wife asks me what my New Year’s resolutions are going to be and I answer that I don’t believe in them. I do believe in making positive changes but I feel that if there is truly a desire to make something happen, why wait until January 1st? I also know that most resolutions fail when there isn’t a solid commitment to make a change. Change can be hard.

The reality is change is important and necessary, and our industry is experiencing as much change now as any other time previously. Though the design and construction industry is continuing to recover and industry forecasts are positive, there appears to be a shortage of quality people available to design, manage, and execute the work. Additionally, construction costs are increasing, and project margins have not recovered from the great recession. The feedback we hear from our owner, developer, and GC partners is that if costs increase, the deals they are working on won’t pencil out and may not get built. This leads us in one of two directions: do we simply accept this and roll with the punches, or do we go back to the drawing board and find ways to transform this new reality?
