A Winning Combination

In our continuing efforts toward more efficient processes and collaboration, we’ve now formally integrated our engineering drafters and detailers into one department. This effort is led by Chris Lawson, COO, and is part of our Integrated Design-Build (IDB) process. Chris has been developing our IDB process since 2003, and the close relationship between our engineering drafters and detailers has been integral throughout this process. By forming this Virtual Construction Modeling (VCM) Department, we are able to further build upon our employees’ individual skills and strengths. Successful integration of these teams is somewhat unique in the industry.

Department team members Chris Bodwin, VCM Manager and Tricia Reed, VCM Support & Development, report that their success is a result of PSF’s culture of focusing on client goals and project outcomes. Integration of these departments coupled with significant improvements in 3D modeling software (Revit, NavisWorks, Autodesk Fabrication) have created efficiencies across many departments.

We’re seeing more efficient workflows between engineering, VCM, and field personnel because design drawings are closer to shop drawings. This also makes for even more precise takeoffs by estimating. In addition, higher-quality 3D models have improved model sharing for MEP coordination, resulting in better clash detection earlier in the design process. Jim Reynolds, President sums it all up: “Our internal collaboration facilitates external collaboration and communication. We go to meetings with general contractors with identified issues and clashes and present them with solutions.  This reduces risk, lowers costs, and shortens schedules – creating a win-win for everyone. After all, who wouldn’t want that?”
